Zoom Optimized for Education
Zoom (class project)
UX/UI Designer, Interaction Lead
Problem Summary
During the COVID-19 pandemic, educators faced challenges using Zoom as it was primarily optimized for business rather than education. Teachers needed intuitive, accessible features to facilitate remote learning and maintain effective communication with students. The goal of the project was to optimize Zoom’s desktop app to better support educators and improve the remote classroom experience.
Project Highlights
Research and Problem Identification
I collaborated with my team to understand the educational use of Zoom through competitive analysis and user interviews. We identified key pain points, including limited communication features, lack of integrated learning tools, and difficulty seeing students while presenting. These insights guided the design process.
Prototyping and User Testing
I created high-fidelity wireframes and integrated them into a unified prototype. Usability testing revealed that users could complete tasks 100% of the time compared to 43% with the original app, and task completion time was reduced by half. Feedback indicated a clear preference for Zoom with the new educational features.
Prototyping and Testing
I built a high-fidelity prototype to showcase user journeys and key interactions. Usability testing validated the design, with positive feedback highlighting usability and aesthetics. I integrated user feedback to refine the final product.
